Zhaheba Fm
Type Locality and Naming
The type section is located in the Region-B Basin of the Zhaheba area, Fuyun County, Xinjiang. It was named by the No.701 Party under the Metallurgical Geological Prospecting Company of Xinjiang and the Xinjiang Coal Administration in 1974, and was cited officially by the Compiling Group for the Regional Stratigraphic Chart of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (1981).
Lithology and Thickness
Volcaniclastics. Its Lower part is composed of variegated tuffaceous breccia, sandy conglomerate, tuffaceous sandstone, siliceous rock, tuffaceous claystone, gradating upwards to tuffaceous siltstone and fine-grained sandstone, intercalated with sandy ferruginous rock, with the siltstone yielding a great amount of plant fragments, with a thickness of 148 m. Its Upper part is composed of dark-grey and black siltstone and siltstone, intercalated with minable coal seams.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
Unconformable contact with the underlying volcanic rocks of the Lower Permian Series (Kalagang Fm)
Upper contact
Uncertain; no top of the formation having been found. Chart shows overlying regional is Jurassic.
Regional extent
Distributed in the Santanghu Basin and the Zaheba region to the northwest of the Ertai area. In the basin of Region-A, the lower part of the formation is composed of tuff, with its upper part consisting of coarse-grained rocks, and with the coal seams increasing in amount.

Fossils
Yields Plant fossils (phytolites) such as Callipteris altaica, Zamiopteris glossopteroides, Noeggerathiopsis iljinskiensis, Pursongia sp., Carssinervia sp., Calamites sp. and Sphenopteris sp.
Age
Depositional setting
It is interpreted as continental volcaniclastic rock deposits.
